I have been toying with the idea of doing a diy overflow. I really like your set-up, and the fact that you don't lose siphon in a power outage.
What is the purpose of the clear tubing you used? Is it necessary?

Think of the clear tube as a safeguard. The siphon can only ever remove the water from that. It holds about a pint of water so if anything were to go wrong that's all that would end up in your sump. Without it been there the white tube would remove all the water in the tank. That's why its important to have a watertight seal on the clear tube
