Just a quick briefing...
About a week ago I bought a 55 gallon tank, stand, t-5, powerhead, and canister filter in a package deal that included live sand & live rock and a jug with 5 gallons of saltwater. For about the past 3 days I've had around 5 gallons of saltwater sitting in the tank (to keep the sand submerged & the rock wet.) I went out and bought some pre-mixed saltwater today to add to my tank, but when I opened the lid....WHOA!!!!!! It smelled like a horse took a salty s*** in my tank or something. I realized the source was ONE of my live rocks that came with the package deal. I was skeptical because of the dark maroon/purple algae it had already developed when I got it. It looked unlike the other rocks in the deal. I put it in the tank initially but oh my god.......I threw it out.
My question is WHAT IN THE HELL could've made it smell that bad? Maybe it had something to do with the still water.....Idk......Any ideas?
