Im adding 2 new chambers to my sump..right now the glue is drying...my question is if my power heads are on..and moving the water..will my fish be ok
.

Hey long as it works, the sump can be nice and dirty and crude... thats why its not the display tank! :-)

Make sure it holds water fine before you hook everything up to your DT, you wouldn't want to accidentally drain it!
 
:umbrella: will do a test tomorrow....hope it holds water...i think it will i added alot of glue.....and that glue that you put on the conners...lol...sorry i dont know what ist call...
 
silicone... silicone is a sealant not a glue. A lesson learned the tough way with my sump build. (The baffle tipped over while running twice before I wised up and used epoxy. a mistake that meant rebuilding my sump twice.) :-) If all you have used is silicone you need to stop now and rethink your build. It will hold today but give it 6-8 weeks under water and it WILL give way.
 
+1 to all above. Acrylic must be bonded with Weld-on. Use either #4 (watery consistency) or #16 (syrupy). You will have to purchase from a plastics manufacturer as Lowes and Home Depot do not carry the stuff. Perhaps a LFS in your area will. You can use only 16, but it may not look quite as clean. After the initial bond run a bead of Weld-on on the inside of the joint to ensure that it will be water tight.

this stuff actually causes the acrylic to bond at a molecular level effectively "welding" the two pieces together. Once you do one or two pieces it is extremely easy to work with.

right now its runing ok...no leaks....i will buy the (well on)...i was thinking of making a nother sump...but bigger..but for now im out of money....i leaft it for 2 day with water to see if it will hold and it did...its strong but i will re make it again....now i know....
 
please believe me that it will hold for 4-6 weeks but it will break down under the pressure and if you leave it, eventually you are going to have a problem. Good Luck!!! :-)
 
wow im glad i found this thread i am building my sump out of an old 55 gal tank. will the 'weld on' work for acryllic and glass? has anyone purchased it online that could throw up a link?

Are you putting up acrylic for baffles? I used just silicone. He (I think) was trying to attach two sumps together.

No weld-on will not glue acrylic to anything else. It is for acrylic to acrylic.

silicone will work for glass to acrylic though you are still better with epoxy. just remember, silicone is not a glue meaning it doesn't have binding strength, it is simply a sealant
 
I just needed it to keep the baffles in place. No pressure or anything. Just the separation. I understand a lot of people do it this way.
