I do not think stainless steel would be ok. Stainless ONLY means it will Stain Less, it will still rust just takes alot longer. The main difference in stainless steel and steel is the higher Nickle content in stainless. Now im not sure about something made of solid nickle it may be ok to use...

you should never lose siphon with an HOB overflow once the tank drains to the bottom of the overflow the water will stop draining but the siphon should never be lost. the only time is should be lost is if the U shaped tube from the inside to the outside is removed allowing air to enter the tube...

I can pick up live sand dollars all day long on the beach where I live. The water temp here gets into the mid 80's in the summer. Sometimes there are so many that you can feel them crushing under your feet as you walk thru the surf. I have seen them as small as a quarter and as large as 7in across.
