i agree i do not think that anything in the tank hurt the fish. it more than likely diesed from malnutrition like ssalty said.

Do you have city water or well water on tap? City water isn't good but well water can be even worse. With the city water at least it's filtered of a lot of contaminants but well water especially if it's an artesian well has all kinds of nasties in it. Whatever has made it's way into the water table is coming out of your tap, i.e. fertilizer, petrolium, pesticides so on and so forth. Just something to consider even if you're deciding to get an ro/di unit.
