advantage of sump?

I have been thinking more about the addition of a sump to my system and had a question I couldn't find the answer to searching past threads. Does the additional water volume add to dt volume to figure maximum number of fish allowed in dt, or is only the volume of the dt itself come into play? I understand it would not allow for fish that do better in larger tanks, just wondered about maximum stocking is increased by adding a sump.

Not really because it doesnt increase the amount of space that the fish have to live in. But having sump is really nice because you can hide equipment in there and the increased water volume give you better water quality and better control over your water quality.

But all your equipment needs to have the capacity to process volume of both tanks combined, right? My thought was that with the extra lr and larger skimmer, it could handle a larger bioload, but I understand that fish simply need their space. Thanks.
