Cycling New Tank

I have been keeping freshwater fish for 30 years, but this weekend jumped into the marine fish world with a new tank. My question is: "Is the niter bacteri the same between fresh and salt? In other words, can you inoculate the salt tank with filter media from the fresh tank?"

Not from what I can tell. When you go to the store and buy bacteria to cycle your tank there is a fresh water and a salt water brand. I could be wrong, I haven't dealt with fresh water that much.

fresh and salt are different . you should innoculate with salt water bact.

Chris and J are right saltwater bacteria are differant.If you want a easy quicker cycle try live sand. It has bacteria in it .With saltwater you need about 3 times as much patiance as with freshwater.So take your time and enjoy .Good Luck

Thanks for the advice. I have added live sand to the tank for cycling purposes. I will post pictures soon.
