I am going to start cycling my tank next week and want to use fish to do it. I know that’s not the preferred way but it may be a while before I can afford to put any good fishies in the tank so If it takes a while that would be ok.

I get the feeling that using damsels isn't the best idea.

Is there an inexpensive fish that I can use to cycle but I don’t have to get rid of when I’m ready to add more??

You'd be better off to just throw in a raw table shrimp.
Anything thats hardy enough to survive the cycle is going to a PITA when you try to add more fish.

Great I read that and now I feel bad. I guess I'll go the shrimp route. I plan on starting tomorrow.

You can use a piece of shrimp, or some fish food. Letting the shrimp or food rot in the tank accomplishes the same thing as cycling with a live fish.
