Dosing Set up?

I have heard people talk about the pros and cons of using a dosing system. I am not familiar with how these work or what I will need to set one up. What are the benefits? What kind of supplements do you dose? Just trying to figure out if I want to go in that direction and if my tank is a good candidate for this type of equipment.
