Duncan's 55 gallon FOWLR (soon to be reef)

I'll also be upgrading to a 90 in the next few weeks when my downstairs floor is done being re-finished.
I'm wondering how I should go about the whole situation. I really don't want to continue using the mixture of fine grain sand and crushed coral I have for a sandbed currently, but with all the life down there and the fact that my mandarin needs all those copepods I don't think I really have a choice.
Also wondering what the safest way to go about moving the sandbed is. I'm afraid I'll have a nitrate explosion if I pull the whole thing out and move it to a new tank. Thinking mabe if I just set the 90 up first with like 40 gallons in it and save all my livestock/rock in totes and stuff, I could move the sandbed and check for NH3/NO2/NO3 in the following few days?
Or maybe I could even just plop 40 pounds or so of aragonite right on top of my regular sand bed?
