Eheim 2232

I have a EHEIM 2232 for my 37 gallon setup (under a week old)

Anyway the question is, what filter media should be in there. There are two trays to put with ceramic or rock (i think its rock, there are little round balls). Does it make a difference?

How often should these filters be changed? Should I add carbon in a tray?

Should I remove the carbon filter during the cycling process?

The carbon will help remove any odor from the cycling tank. I'd leave it in.
