Do i need to have sand on the bottom of my tank for gobies or can i put some coral substrate in there instead.

Gobies will not do well with crushed coral. The particles are too large and sharp. You'll need several inches of sand if you want to keep a sand-dwelling goby.

try and get one that is feeding on frozen or flake too, if your tank is not big enough it will not have enough food from just the sand

what kind of gobies? some will be fine others won't.
