I'm researching setting up a reef tank.
Thinking of starting with a biocube or setting up a used 20 gallon...

welcome! My advice on tank - figure out what footprint you want/can have (length especially) and buy the biggest tank you can afford.

Welcome to the site fellow Texan...I agree try and go with the biggest tank you can afford, however even smaller tanks look great just a little limiting on fish selection. I have a 45 and love it but so wish it was a 125 or bigger.
