I was sold some purpleup which is a coraline algae accelerator. Is using these chemicals a good idea or a bad idea?

most are just extra nutrients.watch you nitrate reeding.A good way to get coraline to take off is to get some scapings and them to your tank.I have seen them for sell on ebay before

well do you have coraline in your tank now? if not the additive isn't going to help.

I would suggest against adding it, but if you keep you alkalinity and calcium right and have the proper lighting that stuff will take off.

Just keep an eye on the water chemistry and do regular water changes and within a couple months you should notice it all over the place.

just one golden rule. never add anything to your system unless you have determined a need for some corrective measure and then have researched and determined the fix for the corrective measure, otherwise, keep up water changes and let nature take its course.
