why does liveaquaria say leopard wrasses are "expert only"

my lfs has a female one and its a beauty. but im really curious.

I've wondered the same thing. Not just the leopard wrasses but many will say expert only. What makes them expert?

Usually because they need special things, specialized diets, special tank conditions, etc.

yeah i was wondering what was so special about the leopard wrasse. i didnt know they were hard to keep. what makes them hard? like specifically

Leopard wrasses (like mandarins) will usually only eat live foods. So they can be hard to get eating. If you buy one, you should make sure that it is eating frozen foods first. If it is eating, then they are as easy as any other wrasse. I, personally, would not order one of those fish online. There's no way to know if it will eat in my tank or not. When NDB bought mine for me, we ordered it through the LFS and made sure it was eating before we took it home.

like many other wrasses, the leopard will bury itself in the sand at night, and if you have coarse substrate like crushed coral, it can hurt itself when it dives into the sand
