Hi guys and gals just joined today and am currently almost a month into my first sw tank.
It's a 55 gal with live rock and dsb. Ok my first of many questions i'm sure is according to my testing i'm cycled but I never got diatoms isn't that part of the sw cycling process?

Hello and welcome to the site...glad to have you aboard. If you started out with enough live rock and sand, it's possible to skip the cycle and diatom stage.

I would get rid of the dsb, they will cause a tank to crash and there are much safer ways of removing nitrates

welcome to the site. i have to disagree about the dsb crashing a tank i have always used a dsb in my tanks and have never had any trouble. you just cant mess with the sand or keep things that live in the sand to keep the top layer stired up.

Yea i've been researching sw reef tanks for months before I ever set my tank up so I think i'll be ok and anyways it's more natural ya don't find shallow beds in the ocean right?

dont get me wrong they can cause your tank to crash. but the deeper layers of sand cannot be messed with

Yea if ya do it right get the right critters in your sand and in your water it'll take care of itself
