HOB fuge for 55gal?

Since I can't really build the sump, do to it being custom sizing, would it even be bennificial to have a HOB refugium on the back of my 55gal?

It would be beneficial in that it would allow a place for pods to grow, but may not be big enough to reduce nitrates with macro algae. I guess it depends on how big of an HOB you can get, and more water volume never hurts.
