lighting for a 55 gallon aquarium

Depends on what you want to keep. I would go with a minimum of 3 watts per gallon if you are going with T5 or metal halides. If you want to kep nems eventually or clams, i would go with 6 or 6 WPG. If you want to go with LED's i would just get a high quality fixture, such as the AI Sol or Ecotech.
 
I have a AquaticLife 4 bulb t5 light and it seems to do the trick on my 55 gallon. Don't cheap out on a light. Buy a light worth the money. T5's you can purchase different bulbs for better lighting spectrum. 4-6 Watts per gallon should be fine for a reef tank.
