How can you tell if the live rock has the bacteria on it that is helping and not just a piece of rock.

Bacteria builds up on anything from filters to fake decor

In other words anything that's spent a good amount of time in an established tank will be beneficial to your new tank

Color is a good indicator.

Actually color wont tell you a thing. If its spent any amount of time in a cycled tank (ie at least a week or two) it should be live

I just meant if it's been in there long enough to develop coraline algae, then it is most likely live even though unrelated.
