Local fish store

From what we all know, most sales people are concerned about selling and making their commission. I have to say that the sales people at my LFS actually cares and only sell me what is needed. The LFS is like a fish supply super store with 2 stories. These two guys there are enthusiast themselves and have several tanks at home. It is refreshing to know that these kinds of sales people exist. I will give some examples.

From the very beginning, "K", never tried to over sell me. He knew I was new to this hobby. He had the opportunity to sell me on all kinds of stuff but he did not. He helped me get enough to start. While helping me get live sand, he saved me $14 because he found a bag that was the same brand and was the same thing but had different SKU numbers. He then sold me enough live rocks to start with and actually picked out nicer rocks and gave me a premium rock for non-premium price. He even gave me his personal number and I was text him for advice and steps to get my tank started.

The other sales guy I deal with there, "M", never tried to over sell me either. Recently I bought some coral because they had an anniversary sale of buy 2 get 1 free. He helped me choose the right corals that would survive with my current light system. He didn't try to over sell me on extra coral food when I didn't need it.

Just yesterday, "K", told me to come by on Tuesday and he will bring me a 5 gallon jug of RO water for free.

These guys are really cool and helpful. So, my point is that there are still sales people that care and truly love what their doing.

Dvong I'm glad to hear this. There are a couple guys at my lfs that are like this as well. They never try to over sell me. If I pick a coral that maybe isn't so good for my tank they let me know that its not suitable and why and they point me in the right direction. not all fish store employees suck. Just most lol

i dont really have a choice where i am at oak harobar, WA has one LFS and it sucks to say the least. other one i have found is a 2 hour drive.

I'm jealous! You are very lucky to have found this store. There are two LFS in my area and one is a farm/feed store that has dedicated a good portion of their store to fish (both marine and fresh). They carry the usual stuff but also sell exotic marine fish (feather stars, octopus, sharks, etc.) that are destined for a very short life in home aquariums. The other is a chain that also sells puppy mill dogs and I have a problem supporting that. Neither of them are concerned with livestock beyond making a buck. Thank goodness for Living Reefs and the combined knowledge here.

Good find, dvong! Post a vendor review so others in your area know about them. I have been lucky to have 2 lfs's that are incredible. One of them I know can special order me anything I need, too, so I don't have to worry about shipping costs. They will also do their best to meet/beat a competitor's price.

I want to one day open my own store and I will focus on education and selling people the right things for their level of experience and tank size.

I was waiting on a local LFS guy to finish with a customer to get some water and the customer was just setting up a new tank.

They bought 50 gallons of their water in buckets then started picking out fish!

He sold them 2 clowns and a tang and told them to come back in 2 weeks to get an anemone!!

So they hadnt even put the water in the tank yet and he sold them 3 fish!

I never went back to that store again.

One time at Petco, I overheard the 'aquatic specialist' tell someone that a yellow tang could be acclimated to a freshwater tank.
