Saltwater Guy
Hi I am very new to salt water. I just bought a 55 gallon tank last night. I have mixed my salt and water together. They told me to get the water ph levels all good first then i have to wait a month then i can get live rock and then a clean up crew and then fish I am reading other post about their first fish having ich? And they have it under control? What is ich and how do you take care of it?

Hello and Welcome!

Actually you want to add your rock right away and cycle your tank. You can learn how to do that in this article:

I would also suggest you read this article to learn about all the different chemicals and how to keep good water in a saltwater tank. Its probably the most important thing in keeping a successful tank

Here are some other articles I think you will find very helpful as well:

Also ich is a common disease in marine fish. However its very easy to avoid dealing with ich. The easiest way to prevent and ich outbreak is to keep your fish in a low stress environment. Which can be done by not overstocking your tank, making good choices about the fish you buy (making sure everyone will get along and your tank is the correct size for the fish) and keeping good water chemistry. Sounds daunting, but a little research goes a LONG way! If you have more questions i would suggest you read this:

The best advice i can give you is go slow and research everything before you do it or buy it!

+1 Lil Fish!! Hello and Welcome. The one thing you must have in this hobby is PATIENCE!!! It takes a long time to get things the way you want. Dont EVER rush it or you will not like the outcome

Thanks the replies you sent were great. I went out and bought a few live rocks today. I am buying a few at a time because of the budget. I have been doing research the past few days and have learned so much. There is so much you have to know. I plan on taking my time with this. I dont want to kill any fish. No fish deserves to die because I didnt know what I was doing.

You can buy just a few lbs of live rock and the rest as dry rock. It will save you a ton of money. After your tank cycles, all the rock will be live and in a few months you wont be able to tell what was originally dry rock anyways.

My favorite place to buy dry rock is: MarcoRocks Aquarium Products
