When do I need to have my lights on?

Fish only right now and a crappy light I got for free.

Can I leave them in the dark at night

Run it 8-12 hours and dark at night is good. Most fish like to sleep.

cool thanks. I probably shoulda asked before I bought them but I was so happy to get fish. That dead shrimp thing was getting old

Try to copy nature with your tank. Most people leave their lights on for 8 to 12 hours a day. You can leave them on for even less if you have fish only.
