I agree that you should replace the canister filter with a protein skimmer instead. But the canister filter is not totally useless. It's excellent for running carbon and phosphate removal media periodically. A lot of people use their canister filters to run carbon for one day every couple weeks, or one day every month. And use phosphate removal media when they are having algae problems.
Do not add any more fish until your tank is done cycling. There's a pretty good chance that the animals you have already will not survive the cycle, since ammonia and nitrites are quickly fatal to the animals. It's up to you if you want to risk it and try to keep them.

Hello and Welcome to the site. Good luck with your tank...just follow all the advise given to you, and you will be fine...just remember, we all had to start off as rookies, and learned along the way, but you and I were fortunate, because we had the members on this forum to guide us along.
