Why is it that my nitrite results don't match anything on the card? Its coming in as a dark purple and doesn't match any color on the card...

What kind of test kit are you using? You're nitrite should be 0 otherwise you're animals would be dead.

I think its a marineland kit. There's 2 chromis in there and they seem happy as can be.

Then your nitrite is probably 0. Most people don't test for nitrite after the initial cycle.

Probably a bad test kit, because like goose said, your fish would be dead. anything that's lavender or purple in my API test kit means there's nitrites, otherwise it would stay a pretty blue color.

Could be a bad test kit, if you are concerned have your LFS test your water.

Just an update guys, i just did a full water test. The tank has finally cycled!

ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 0
pH 8.2
SG 1.025

i'm sooooo excited.

thanks D, i even went out and bought a 2nd kit just for nitrite and nitrate. i used both kits seperately and they're giving me the same results, so i'm thrilled. :bounce:

I had problems with my test kit also. I would put the chemical in and almost instantly the colour would go to blood purple. I tried again and same thing, so I called Hagen (ewww) and they told me apparently if the chemicals are" expired" it can mess up the test. I didt know noxious chemicals in air sealed containers expired so fast :P

Hold the reagent bottles upside down and completely vertical. If you hold them at an angle they will drop out the wrong amount.
