So... What's the difference between having the overflow box and just a pipe drawing out water?

If you just have a siphon, when there is a power outage, it will drain your entire tank, then when it stars drawing air, the siphon will break and then when power goes back on, it won't draw water and then potentially over flow your tank.
The over flow box stops the water flow down to the sump, but retains the siphon so when power turns back on, the water will continue draining to the sump.
