Pistol Shrimp Question

Recently, I added a pinkbar goby/pistol shrimp pair. The goby committed suicide, and now the pistol is all alone. The other day I noticed it still dug itself a nice little cave. Now, the cave is still there, but it looks like he isn't maintaining it. Also, one of my brittle stars seems to have taken residence in the shabby cave. I haven't heard any popping at all either.

Is he still alive? Do all pistols "pop?" Even though I noticed his cave, I have never actually seen the pistol. I know its possible he is building another cave somewhere else.

I want to get him another goby, but want to make sure he is actually alive. It would also be nice to know where he is so I can introduce the goby in the right location for optimal pairing.

He may be alive. Hard to tell. Try looking for him at night. Most shrimp are nocturnal, so see if you can find him with a flashlight. You could also leave a piece of food in front of his entry (in the dark) and wait and see if he comes out and gets it.
