How many powerheads should I have on my 55 gal tank.

Two would be ideal. One in each back corner, pointed upwards so that the surface of the water is rippled.

when you say pointed up at the surface should I also have them facing the front of the glass or one facing the front and one facing the back and what do you think about pvc as return pipe

what lfs do you shop at in tucson

Well, there are only two LFS here, and one of them only opened a couple months ago, so we don't have too many choices in Tucson. Southwest Saltwater (now on Oracle) is where I've shopped for the last 10 years. But a friend of mine opened up Simply Elegant Aquatics (on Campbell) and that store is really nice as well.

Most people put the powerheads in the back of the tank. In a 55, the back would be better. Is your tank drilled? Or are you using an overflow box? Most people use PVC as their plumbing.

Yeah PVC will be fine. I like LocLine, it attaches to the PVC and allows you to direct the flow.
