protein skimmer?

octopus brand skimmers and Aqua C skimmers are highly recomended. They one you get will depend on the size of your tank and the bio-load of that tank.

I have a Seaclone, a bit of a pain to setup initially, but it is working very well and the price is right. I know many people may disagree with this, but it is the newest model and the changes they've made are similar to the mods posted online for it.

Reef Octopus, I have a Remora C hob, don't go that route. I've seen these reef octo's in use at the lfs and they kick butt and are great for the money.

I've been looking at the Reef Octopus skimmers and there are so many options!!! It's a little confusing. I am in the process of upgrading my 55 to a 90 and wonder if someone can recommend which model of Octo would be best.

I got the 110 recirculating one, external. I've seen these in action and you won't believe the gunk they pull out. Mine should be in today, 3 week wait to get it.

SeaBee: How did you decide on that particular model? I see on the Coral Vue website they have recirculating, pin wheel, hang on back. Some are round, some are square, some are clear, some are red. They are so expensive, I want to make sure I'm getting the correct one. http://http://www.coralvue.com/#

I've had the remora c hob for several months now, all I do is adjust it everyday because it either pulls water or nothing. In the interim I got a job part time at a new fish store by me, great stuff and great prices. So I learn now by watching what works for them. One by one on their 6 or so systems of like 500 gallons they have been installing the reef octopus skimmers. You cant beat the bubbles in this thing, and the round shape is a must to swirl the bubbles to the top. The shit they pull out is unbelieveable, smells like rotten crap, black, dark water, and great foam. They use the recirculating model, some external, some internal. They buy the larger one, for their needs. I went with the smallest, my tank is only a 55 and will be a 90 or 110 in about 6 months. I went with the reef octo 110, Coral Vue Home Page the first one on that page. I believe in what I see more than what others may say, but complaints I listen to. I wish I found this site and the new lfs sooner, I could have saved a lot of money. But I've seen these reef octos up and running and they are incredible. Another guy got one the other day and he tells me I wont believe the crap they pull out. He has a 180 and had some other skimmer, but he too saw these working at the lfs and had to get one, and cost about half what he paid for some other skimmer. I also have the advantage of selling the old stuff at the lfs, they do that on consignment, so its really cool. Good luck, dont worry about the reef octo, I doubt you'll be dissappointend, I will start a post with pictures later on my set up and you will see the collection cup for yourself. My buddy has a downdraft built into his sump and the reef octo is gonna blow that away also! I cant wait to get mine! By the way, I paid $180 for mine.

I have a Reef Octo Extreme 160 for my 90, great skimmer startups are rough though. I have to rotate the impellor to get it to work.

Where do you set the water level in the reef octo? I have mine online now and the bubbles are about half way up into the collection cup. Starting to see chunks, but I bet its dirt in the unit. I rinsed it all out before. Also, what are these pesky o-rings for? LOL, j/k. I glued the pvc T they gave me, and the fittings on the return side. So far, so good. I will start my own thread with pics later.
