I know of a lot of people using a fuge and a skimmer and it works perfectly.

I also forgot to mention its a safe haven where you can grow/raise things that would normally get eaten in your main tank. things like pods, and macro algae. pods get send to the tank via the return pump and are great for clean up and fish food for certain fish. and macro algae is great for nutrient export

The refugum can be used as a form of filtration.

Having macro algae is good for the tank as they eat bad items like nitrates and so forth. A refugum also lets you house a skimmer or even some extra live rock for biological filtration. However, I would not recommend it as the only form of filtration.

+1 Jmck, your refugium would be a great addition to your overall filtration system.

Not gonna Hurt anything, only make things better. If you want one with little to no maitence don't use any filter media, only LR and macro algae and make sure it as a light for macro to grow.
