Setting up a sump

I'm just starting a 55 gallon tank and I was running a canister filter I had from freshwater before. I want to get rid of it and put in a sump, but I am completely clueless as to what I am doing here. Tank has been filled for about a month, put in 75 pounds of live rock last week. I have an old 20 gallon that I can use for the sump, but I'm lost from there. Can anyone help? lol

I have a 65 gallon display and 20 gallon sump with a refugium in the middle. It's very easy to build (silicon, lexan or plexiglass). The distance of the bubble traps are about 1.25 inches wide between each divider. My water comes in from the left into a filter sock and into the refugium and into the last chamber as the return. If I was able to fit a bigger sump then I would have thrown the heater in here as well.
