Stupid Protein Skimmer ? for the sump challenged

This is for future understanding...

say I buy a 300g tank and set up a 90g sump. I know most people buy a protein skimmer that is higher rated than your tank, but do you buy one higher rated than 300g or higher rated than the total water of 490g?

Your total water will be 390, and the difference between 300 and 390 is not a lot. I've always done twice the tank size. Any extra water from your sump system is a bonus.

i messed up with the 490 part and meant 390. I tried changing the numbers a couple times to make i more of a difference. I'm not that bad at math =)

the bigger the skimmer the more "cleaning power" it will have... so really i would shoot for the largest skimmer i could afford... especially if you go with a large tank like that

I'm not really getting a 300g tank, well not now at least. I was just using it as a reference to understand the concept.

a bigger tease is that I have been on this site since Jan 2008 and got a sweet camera two Christmas's ago and have yet to use it on my tanks or anything ever!
