If you replace the BBs with LR rubble,just make sure the rubble is submerged,or their just a different kind of BB.
 
The bioball section looks fairly small.You can always use that section for carbon/phosphate in a media bag.You can put rock rubble under the plate that holds the bioballs or put some rubble in the first chamber.Like Yote said,have the rubble fully submerged otherwise it won't be any better than bbs.
 
If you have plenty of live rock then you won't need the bioballs.Aim for at least one pound per gallon...150g. tank-150lbs of live rock or more.
 
If you keep the BBs,you'll have to clean pretty regular.Without maintance,they'll cause you nitrates.
