I have a 3 stage filter system, it contains the sponge like blocks. How are you supposed to clean then?

most people dont use those filters because the gunk they collect can lead to nitrate problems. But i would take out the sponges with ever water change and clean them really well in the old tank water.

Like Hannah said. Though I normally just clean mine in the sink using tap water. Ring them put, and shake the piss out of them, then rinse again in some RO and replace them.
