Tank water flow

So... 120 gallon with two VorTech MP40's plus the return from the sump.

I've had to turn the power heads all the way down just to tame the water flow enough so that I have medium and low flow areas to place corals. With the power heads set half way, my whole tank is medium to high flow.

I have them placed about 4-5" from the top, then about 3-4" from the front of the tank. I haven't been able to find an article that tells you where to place the power heads for intended performance.

Everyone says two MP40's in a 120 gallon, but why does it seem like severe overkill? I feel like I'm doing something wrong.

A lot of time, when people think they have too much flow,it's just about right.
As the tank grows, the flow currents will change through the deflection of the water. And as long as the sand stays on the bottom, then there isn't too much flow.

I guess my issue is that it's hard to find medium to high areas in the tank with moderate to low flow without turning the power heads way down. Which, yer right... If the corals were larger it wouldn't be an issue either.
