How long before doing a water change should I prepare tap water before adding to the tank?

To be on the safe side, 2-3 days should suffice. I think on average 24-48 hours is recommended

If your asking about saltwater.It should be allowed to mix and aerated at least 24 hours.Its also a good idea to keep the temperature close to DT.You mention tapwater,I highly recommend you switch to RO/DI water.

TAP WATER = EVIL. RO/DI water or just DI work way better. There are almost no contaminites in RO/DI or DI in tap water there are tons. Save yourself some heartache and start with the good suff.

At least 24 hours. And I agree that tap water is not a good idea to be putting in your tank.

You'll regret using tap water.I'd suggest the using the water out of the RO machine at wal-mart or using the distilled water.The wal-mart brand distilled,with the blue lid works great.

tap water tends to lead to an algae bloom, which will have you pulling out your hair. Stick with RO water from the store

So if I used RO/DI water then all I would have to do is mix the salt to the correct salinity of the tank then add the water? Get water to about the same temp of course.

I would use a powerhead and let it mix and aerate 24hrs. first.
