What is the approximate volume of a single pound of sand

Or better yet, 20 lbs, trying to figure out how many bags I need to add to my aquarium because I am planning on replacing the sand.

That calculator is a little off. For example:
I filled a 20H refugium with 70lbs of sand. There's AT LEAST 6" of sand everywhere and even 7" in some spots. The 20H has a 24x12 footprint.

If you plug that into the calculator with 6" for depth, it says I need 90lbs. I know for certain that I dumped in (3) 20lb bags AND exactly 10lbs from the 10g frag tank.

What size tank do you have and how much sand depth do you want?

Your question about volume per pound of sand is kind of a loaded question. Volume per pound is going to be a factor of grain size. 2lbs of course crushed coral will take up a lot more volume than 2lbs of fine aragonite sand. There's more air voids in the bucket of crushed coral so it's going to take up more space than sugar sized aragonite sand.

Did you input the actual weight of the particular sand you used?

* According to CaribSea,
"Most all the aragonites weigh 70 lbs/cubic foot.
The Aragamax, Aragamax Select, and Aragamax Grand Bahama
weigh about 90-100 lbs/cubic foot."

Well NO. :shock: That would be stupid. :mrgreen:

Golly now it says 70lbs of sand for my 20H fuge.

Thanks ccCapt. :Cheers:
