How many of you are using UV filters? Anyone have any suggestions for a 55gal tank w/ 20 gallon sump?

I'm fairly certain only a handful of people here do. It's just not that effective of a device.

It wasn't me!
I use one, and have on all my tanks. On my 55 I used just a 9 watt that hung on the back. I currently have a 36 watt on my 120.

I Actually use one in my Tank also, But this is because i Had A Ich Break out when i first started my tank so i use it to help control it. I actually use a cheap green machine one right now but going to get a inline one soon.

I have a coralife uv sterilizer as well. I think the pros outweigh the possible cons of them. Many people use them with great success and maintain beautiful reef tanks. I dont think its a "necessary" item, but for me its an extra prevention as well.

I honestly cant see how these things work. My senior project was designing a system to sterilize blood and we spent a lot of time looking into using UV sterilization. But it was never going to work because the UV lights only penetrates in a few mm into an liquid and to adequately kill anything there had to be significant exposure time.
