Frozen food NOT FROZEN!

I received a fairly large frozen fish food order from petsolutions.com yesterday. The problem is that it was supposed to be shipped 2nd day air and they mistakenly sent it regular ground, so it was all unfrozen. The dry ice was completely gone at this point. Most of it was still cool to the touch (and some was clearly hot), but completely unfrozen. They are reshipping it 2nd day air at no charge so that is not a problem.

My question is: Do you think I can refreeze the food without any problems? I hate to throw so much away and it doesn't say "do not refreeze" any where on the packages.

Have any of you refroze your food once it was thawed out?
 
well, i feed my eel redfish that i catch down at the coast, and when i get home i cut it into bite size chunks, and put that into little cups and freeze them, then when its time to feed, i jut float one of thoes cups in the sump till its thawed, feed, then just put it back in the freezer, so its fresh raw fish, and i freeze it and thaw it over and over till that cup's empty, and i havent had any problems yet...

but i'm also not as familiar with what you have so, i dunno. My gut tells me not to chance it, but at the same time, look at what stuipdity i'm performing and its working just fine, so hmmm...
 
A similar thing happened last year, but the food was just partially unthawed and not completely unthawed and warm. I froze it and used it without any problems at least to my knowledge.
 
Would you eat a steak that had been thawed and hauled around in a truck for a day?
I wouldnt risk it.There's no doubt a lot of bacteria starting to build up in it by now,thats probably not very good for your fishes health or water quality.
 
what is it that thawed out? mysis shrimp in a foil bubble pack, or are we talking little shrimps, or what specifically? just thinking that it might help us understand better...

I use formula one frozen fish food. I'll let the cube thaw, hack some small pieces up with a knife then place the food that I didn't feed back into my freezer. I don't see any downfall to thawing and refreezing. My fish are happy and water is pretty perfect :^:

yea, but like with mine, i think its a "how long was it thawed" kinda thing, not a # of times kinda thing...

i dunno what to tell ya on that one.
 
freeze-thaw cycles harm the nutriutionaly quality of the food. probably a neglible amount for most when we are talking about fish and fish food.

but DC i think your right its about how long was it melted for. since they are resending you some i would get rid of the melted stuff. feed it to your plants.
 
I feed Nemo Marine Cuisine. It comes in the little blister packs - cubes. A cube lasts Nemo a week. I punch a cube out and into the shot glass. Let it thaw. Rinse it in RO water. Put the pieces back in the shot glass. Feed Nemo. Freeze the leftovers. I keep thawing and freezing the same chunk until it's gone and I need a new one.

Maybe thats why he's growing so slow? :12:

I wouldn't feed that stuff to my fish if I was you. I suspect you have a lot bigger tank than me and a lot more expensive fish than me. Not worth the risk.

They're shipping you a new order, so I'd toss the melted stuff down the garbage disposal.
 
im sure it would be fine
from the time i get to my house from the LFS the foods already pretty melted
i just stick it in the freezer and its fine
theres this layer of water on top but thats ok
 
Its happened to me where for a full day i forgot to put the food in the freezer. As long as the seals havent been broken, i think a day would be ok. I used the food and all went well.

But use your own judgment on this one...
 
Thank you all for the help with this. It is nice to get so much feedback. I haven't decided yet what to do, but I did put most of it in a separate part of the freezer so as not to get it mixed up with the good stuff. I think I may contact one of the frozen food companies to get their advice. There were a few packages which were puffed up and I think I'll through those away for sure. They were probably spoiled for sure.

:shock: that was something from House, that they found a jar of home made pasta sauce with a popped lid and they said it was a sign of bacteria/spoiling :mrgreen:

I've done that too, but I think Project had the right idea earlier; it's one thing if it was unfrozen for a short time and then refrozen, but we don't know how long ago this fish food defrosted while in shipment. If the dry ice was only meant to support the food the 2 days of supposed shipping then potentially it could have been defrosting for 5 additional days...that could be a bit much.

Not quite, but I've defrosted steaks that I was planning to BBQ for dinner then ended up tossing them back in the freezer after I had been invited to dinner then defrostred it again a week later and it still tasted damn good. Again, though, that was refrozen a short time after being defrosted not after unknown multiple days. :12:

Hate to say it Dave...toss it :sad:....:shock: OR USE IT FOR CAT FISH BAIT!!!!! Let it sit out longer and go catfishin'...wouldn't do too badly.
 
eww yea that would work.. heheh, i have some friends and thier across the street neighbor apparently makes the best commercially available catfish bait in the world, supposedly, but i know that you can smell it when he's making it for miles around(if the wind is going the right direction)
