Well I understand FW through and through. SW I am completely new at. I've read posts about skimmers and live rock or live sand and letting the tank set for some time to setup. So I guess I am looking for a goto book to read to give me the basics I should know before I start my first SW tank...

That's what I was afraid of. I haven't had a chance to read up on it yet. Everything is still in the "Dream" stage. We've just now started our research. $500 a sheet is pretty pricey. maybe I'll do a small one to get used to the building first.. I could always use it as a hospital tank.

OK... so I got the go ahead from my sweetheart who is very excited at the idea of building our very first aquarium... so I started doing my research online and I found 1 place that will sell us a 3/4" x 4' x 8' acrylic sheet for $489. I would need 3 plus (2) 3/4" x 4' x 4' to cap off the sides...

Went to Pet Store today to buy stuff for all the animals and I started looking at the SW books. Is there a particular favorite? thanks :bounce:

That was kinda my thought process... I wanted to make it a second family/game room.

Well, this is a long term project, so cost really isn't an issue... but I am supposing you are correct... I should go wider maybe 4' W x 10' L x 3' H... I really don't want it too tall... I want a shallow tank. I am guessing acrylic. I will have to go pricing.

I am so excited. After much discussion, my wife is allowing me to build my own aquarium for the foyer hallway... I'm looking at 2' x 10' x 2'.. probably SW... and a shorter 2' x 6' x 2' FW on the opposite side or possibly bedroom... Now that's a Valentine's Day surprise!

How do you think a SW tank would do in a garage environment? Temperature wise I mean? If you had the chance to build a wall-length SW aquarium... what...

Cichlids On second consideration, I think everyone is right... I think I will avoid the Cichlids. I think maybe I will do just Tetras. Maybe then I can stock some rare species. I was originally considering building this in the garage, because we are thinking about turning it into a game...
