    Spiny Puffer

I just recently purchased a spiny puffer for my aquarium. Most of the places I check say to feed him hard-shelled shrimp, clams, crabs, snails, etc. What is meant by hard-shelled shrimp. So far I've been feeding him local, bait shrimp.....the frozen kind, after I've thawed it out. Anyone got...

    New tank - Cloudy water

Yeah, more than likely your tank is cycling. Give it some more time but also take a sample to your lfs to test for ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite. See what the results are and go from there. If you purchased the tank, tore it apart, drained it, and then set it back up, your tank is going to cycle.

    Sump drilled holes need patching....maybe.

Never mind. I just used a large quantity of aquarium caulking to seal the fittings that went through the sump.

    Sump drilled holes need patching....maybe.

I'm having problems with leaks coming through two holes in the bottom of the sump along the vertical walls. One of the holes in the return pipe back to the aquarium. The other is a hole no longer in use. I will be trying something this week but wanted to see if anyone had different ideas.

    Canopy keeps heat in?

I'll have to look into the type of canopy you are talking about. For now, I'm just building something quick and easy. Later, I will build the one specific to my liking. As to the opening on the back, I have to have it closed to keep the eels I plan on having...hence the screen enclosure.

    Hydor Skimmer?

I'm doing some research on skimmers. I realize everyone has there favorites and have probably had problems with a few kinds. I'm looking at a Hydor Performance Protein Skimmer for a FOWLR tank. Anyone got any info about good or bad performance?

    UV Sterilization

Thanks for the info Sarah. That's pretty much what I was thinking. I think I'll keep the $280 he wanted me to spend.

    UV Sterilization

In a 220 FOWLR tank, is it necessary to install a uv sterilizer. One of my LFS is "strongly" recommending it. I see how it could be useful, but being necessary is quite different. Anyone got any input? I'm thinking something smells funny and he might be full of :pooh:

    Canopy keeps heat in?

I think I will take both points of view into account. For now I think I'll build a simple screen top and in the future, with better funding, I'll build a canopy with a screen top and vents on the sides for air flow. Thanks for the info.

    New tank - Cloudy water

I forgot to follow up on this thread. I ran mechanical filtration for 24-48 hours to pull some of the fine particulates from the tank. Worked like a charm. It's been clear ever since.

    Canopy keeps heat in?

I think I will build something like this then. This way I can weigh the top down to keep an eel in it.

    Canopy keeps heat in?

A Simple Build-It-Yourself Aquarium Canopy The link above shows the general direction I'm thinking of going in building an aquarium canopy. I want to build it to keep a zebra eel contained within a 220 aquarium. The tank currently does not have any fish in it but has all of the sand, water...

    sump/refugium

I think what he means is what is there any benefits of changing or adding a refugium. I'm no expert but from my reading on the subject, here is what I have found: The refugium is an area within the sump that also has sand and potentially plants. The sand will provide an extra area with the...

    Reef Insane LED Lighting

I just bought a 48" LED strip of the Reef Insane 2xtreme with 453 NM blue. I think the light output vs heat is excellent and love the deep water blue color. Is anyone familiar with this particular lighting. 2XTreme

    First Saltwater Aquarium

As a quick update if anyone who decides to build a stand like this one, you may or may not be able to put the sump underneath it. The reasoning is this: the sump water volume I use is about 60 gallons, but the container will probably hold 90 or so gallons. Because of this size, I was unable to...

    Grouper

Yeah, I may leave them alone. I had thought about the spotted grouper since it said they only get 12" max. Lots of other grouper do get quite large, 2 - 5 feet, and would never think of adding them to any in-house aquarium.

    Grouper

Here is what I am thinking of stocking in the 220.....if I go aggressive vs community aquarium. Probably a zebra eel, a spotted grouper or blue dot, and some variety of Lionfish. I'm really only concerned about the zebra eel. It gets quite large and most of my reading states it will do fine...

    Grouper

I agree. They may be "cool" to have but may be better to look at on a diving trip......or on my grill. I'm just thinking out loud on the forum to see what info people offer up.

    Lionfish

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I still have not decided what to put in my tank yet. So many options. I'm still in a 2 week fish planning session.
