i got new lights and algae is everywhere...all of the sand..the walls...just in 1 day... Why is this?

The new light gave the algae what it needed to really take off.
Just cut the lights back for a while to help keep the algae in check.

how many hours a day are you running your lights? and what kind of lighting do you have? tanks size?

55g, t-5 lighting, there on for about 10 hours a day

Cut em back to 8 hours a day for a while.

i kept them on for only a little while today and it seems to be gone

If you can keep them off for a few days and the slowly build up to 8 hours. I had pretty bad algae. Seattle had a really bad heat wave and I had to keep them off because my tank was so hot but when I turned them back on it was all gone :)

2 or 3 days without light wont hurt anything.
Think about the corals on the wild reefs.They dont get full sunlight 12 hours a day 7 days a week.There are days its cloudy,rainy,and stormy.There'll be times they might a week or more where its so overcast that no sun gets to the corals at all.
