Buddy of mine is pulling the red lava rock outta his tank too. His chief complaint was the red dust that it put all over the tank. I did t know that it would leach metals into the tank. Glad I told him I didn't want it for my tank.

One other thought. You could make your own base rock for cheap.

Think im just gonna buy some base rock and add maybe 20 pounds of live. Does the putty they sell work well for holding the rocks in place? And i can just put the putty on and stick it right in the tank?

I'm not a big fan of epoxying the rock together.
As your tank grows and matures,there will be times when you need to move a rock or 2.If they are epoxyed together,then you got a problem.

True. Guess I'll just try to stack them as best I can.

Just think of your rock like a jig-saw puzzle.Place them so that they are stable and let the rock dictate the looks when your done.

actually, you could think of it more like anti-tetris... you wanna make spaces between the rocks, and have them not fall...

I agree with NOT epoxying the rock together. You will at some point have to move some around to catch a crab of fish or simply do something.
