Deep sand in canister

I appreciate the replies. I'll just have to see how the sand bed looks after a few weeks. I don't think nitrogen bubbles are a problem, its sulfide you have to watch for in the sand bed. I'll keep a check, and if I see anything starting to look black, that's a sign things have gone wrong. The good thing is the canister can be disconnected from the system and the sand safely cleaned.

I'm not really sure at what point sulfides become an issue. Is it a result of too deep a bed, flow issues, or too much detritus in the sand?

I've used the pillow batting from Wal-mart for years. It's the cheapest route for disposable filter material.
