DIY protein skimmers?

So Im looking on youtube at DIY protein skimmers. They seem pretty cheap to build vs expensive store bought. What are your thoughts?

Depends, decent protein skimmers that are DIY can cost a good bit of money, many people only build them if they need the capacity to reach near 1000g skimmer capacity. The acrylic pieces are pretty costly.

That being said, I would try it if I had the time and ability to work it out properly. Reefcentral has several threads about DIY skimmers and what is required. Exact measurements and all.
