is there a way to tell if the bottom of my tank is tempered other than hitting it with a hammer? i got it used and the previous owner had no idea. cannot see any type of mfg on the tank to be able to ask? i'ld like to drill it and not use an overflow. its 62 gallon, about 36"x18.5"x24"tall.

But I wouldnt drill the bottom.You can drill the back glass and do basically the same thing without risking the bottom glass.

so they only temper the bottom of tanks? from what i can gather in reading i only need to worry about the bottom.

Look at it with polarized sunglasses. Tempered glass is slightly polarized.

as far as i know if you use plorised glasses you can see a difference in the glass but not shure for positive.

i use them fishing and can see the fish through the water. what would i be looking for on glass? just see if it is different from the sides i guess? if it looks the same as the sides of the tank then it's ok to drill? would a glass shop be able to tell be if i took it to one? i guess i can call a glass shop and ask.

Some tank manufactures use tempered glass for the back and sides too.But I think thats mostly on their smaller tanks like the 5 and 10 gallons.
