Is it possible to change my wet/dry filter to a refugium down the road.

Yep, just pull out the bioballs and insert rubble and cheato. Get yourself a clip on light from home depo and put in one of those siggly CFL bulbs.

I would start removing the wet/dry now, you will be much better served with a refuge. I would just pull out a cup of the bioballs with each water change. You dont want to remove them all at once because that can cause a mini cycle.
