filters and skimmers?

I am looking to upgrade my filters and skimmer, still new at this so was looking at a canister filter and a threestage external filter? I dont really know what either are or if i need both?, if they are the same thing?, if one cancels out the other?, if one or the other works as a skimmer as well? Any info anyone could shed on the subject would be greatly appreciated...:frustrat:

Well now i just feel like an idiot, read some more and the three stage filter thing was a canister filter....

You'd be better off to just set up a sump system with a good skimmer and forget about those canisters.

Do you have a skimmer right now? If so, what kind? If not, I recommend you just get a skimmer. They are far better than any canister filters.
