Sep 24, 2011 #4 fastrd400 It wasn't me! First off, locate and eliminate the source of your algae. Once you figure out what is causing it, it will go away on it's own.

How high are your nitrates ? Excessive nitrates, or also the presence of phosphates in the water are very common causes of excessive hair algae growth. I believe you want your nitrate levels not to exceed 15ppm.
