Leaf plate corals

Reefing newb
I saw a leaf plate coral in a guy's tank the other day. His was amazing. My LFS has a couple in their cheap frag bin when I asked about purchasing them they told me they were dead, and likely a waste of my money. So I didn't buy one. I've looked at others since and wonder how to tell? The ones I looked at were hard green on top whit under the leaf. Since it was white, he wouldn't sell it to me. Does the white underneath mean it is dead, or not doing well? What should a health one look like?

When your talking a leaf coral is that the same as a monti? The montis will grow out and have color on top but be white at the edge and underneath.

If it's white on the topside, it's dead.

Here's mine before I fragged it. It was about 18"x16"x12" tall.

Nice ccCapt. That's exactly what I'm looking for. If it's there next time I'll pick it up and give it a shot. Can't hurt for $10.
