They're right, it sounds like ich. It's caused by an opportunistic parasite that comes out when your fish are stressed. Commonly, poor water quality, overstocking, fighting, adding too many fish too quickly, etc. There are medications for it, but you cannot medicate the fish in your tank. You would have to remove all the fish to a quarantine (hospital) tank, medicate them in there, and keep the display tank fallow (empty of fish) for an extended period of time.
Usually, fish recover from ich on their own, but that's if you fix whatever made them sick in the first place.
